A few sentences about VI. postgraduate course Sepsis and MODS
The Sepsis and MODS postgraduate course has a remarkably upward trend from year to year, both in terms of the spectrum and quality of lectures, and in terms of the number of students. This year, more than 250 participants were registered, the organizers had to move the course to larger premises at the University of Mining. As every year, the multidisciplinarity among the speakers, chairpersons and listeners attracted attention this year as well. The topics of the lectures ranged from pathophysiological connections to perioperative issues in high-risk surgical patients, the key role of the intestine, issues of artificial pulmonary ventilation, metabolism and nutritional support, bleeding and hemocoagulation disorders, to the interaction of bacteria and antibiotics. An important place was occupied by the issues of sepsis and MODS in children, to whom a separate half-day was modestly designated as a mini-symposium. Lectures by three renowned foreign guests were an indisputable benefit. A traditional positive aspect of the course is the symmetrical meeting of Czech and Slovak colleagues. The enthusiasm of the "founding father" of the entire event MUDr. Roman Kula, CSc. and his team is indomitable, organizational and professional outputs are remarkable. Among them is an electronic carrier with visuals of individual lectures, this time also with sound. We wish you good reading and listening.
prof. MD Pavel Ševčík, CSc.
Dear colleagues!
I consider the organization of the Czech-Slovak Sepsis Forum to be a wonderful thing. First, severe sepsis and septic shock present a tremendous challenge to the intensivist. Due to the lack of a "magic bullet" in treatment, the basic measure still remains the general support of the patient. And that means applying all the knowledge and skills, both on the part of the doctor and the nurse, at his disposal to diagnose, monitor and support failing or failing organs - lungs, circulation, bowel, kidneys, clotting system, nutrition, etc., etc. The course, the soul of which is Roman Kula, allows you to review intensive medicine in its entirety, from the mouths of the best available personalities. And even if it is usually not possible to offer definitive solutions, the authors at least offer their approach - how to recognize the problem, what my goal is, what to do with it, including instructions when it is better not to "act" and not to disturb the body's compensatory processes. Secondly, the course successfully brought together the Czech and Slovak community of intensivists, adults and children, as well as other doctors, and thus realized in practice what might not have happened elsewhere - extraordinary relations between two close nations. The response did not take long - European personalities accepted invitations to give lectures, among which prof. Reinhart, Kubler, Boldt or Martinowitz, with an increased proportion of necessary English. The number of participants, as well as the existence of two sections, allows us to talk about a congress rather than a course. Among the achievements of the organizers can also be included the acquisition and publication of contributions in the course on this CD. We can only wish that this initiative will enable as many doctors as possible to increase their expertise, who for various reasons could not participate in the course. I look forward to meeting you next year.
MD Stefan Trenkler
Dear friends,
allow me to join the opening words of Professor Ševčík and Mayor Trenkler. Their content is certainly very flattering for us - the organizers of the course on sepsis and MODS - and especially encouraging for further work. However, your participation in this year's event was no less flattering and encouraging. Similarly, your opinions, interpreted after the course on various forums, sound very positive. In one sentence, all these facts create a favorable ground for the "rooting" of a postgraduate course on sepsis and MODS in Ostrava. The past six years have been a search for both the internal and external manifestation of this event. Although this process is not finished, I am happy to state that a great organizational team has been formed and a platform has been created that supports the course. It is undoubtedly the cooperation between the Czech-Slovak Forum for Sepsis (hereafter CSFS) and the Faculty Hospital in Ostrava. The same opinion is shared by the CSFS Working Group, which also accepted the proposal to expand the sponsoring platform by other structures - the medical companies ČLS JEP and SLS. No less important is the development of the content focus of this event. Although the main topic will remain the issue of sepsis, we are already intensively discussing the inclusion of other problems in the care of critically ill patients. Thematically different lecture blocks should be added and "meetings with an expert", "postgraduate lessons", or so-called "pro-con discussions" should not be missing. Continuous development is also signaled by the CD-ROM that comes into your hands. It is certainly necessary to apologize for the relatively long time gap between the course and its release. The only reason, however, was its demanding development, and after watching the CD, you will surely agree that publishing a compilation of this scale is not a usual undertaking. What to say in conclusion? Apparently, only that the 7th year of the PG-course on sepsis and MODS will be held on 26-28 January 2005 in Ostrava and the main topic will be: "Severe sepsis - what can be recommended for practice". As an organizer, I now feel a great duty - I cordially invite you to this event!
