Colorful Ostrava – musical and medical

I admit that I have a personal, even intimate relationship with colorful Ostrava. On the one hand, I was born here - in the black one - and have lived here for almost six decades. And then, by a play of fate, I was at the birth of two colorful Ostravas, which are currently symbols that cross the borders of our republic. The first symbol – the musical Colors of Ostrava – was created during the time of deep peace in the eighties of the last century. It was my classmate from primary school Zlatka Gajdošíková (now known more as the married Holušová), who organized a festival of unofficial music bands (Krásné nové stroje, Nahoru dolí po schodišti band, but also Laura and her tigers or Slovakia's Bez ladu a skoda). After 1989, her efforts gradually transformed into the creation of Colors of Ostrava, a music festival that is rightly considered the best indie festival at least in Central and Eastern Europe. The characteristics of Colors of Ostrava are mainly the multicolor of genres and styles, the meeting of musical legends and emerging new stars. The second symbol – the medical Colors of Sepsis – was created in a somewhat similar way. Out of enthusiasm and a desire to share professional information with each other, develop new procedures and share enthusiasm for medicine itself. Today, I remember with nostalgia the first years, which were held in the badly soundproofed room of the Sisters' Home, when there were barely a few dozen participants, who made their own coffee in kettles and formed a queue for the only men's toilet during breaks (even then the off procedure was implemented label – with a one-sided composition of the audience, the women's toilet was also used by men). And like the musical Colors, the Sepsis and MODS postgraduate course, thanks to the admirable efforts of the father - founder Roman Kula, has grown into a unique entity similarly characterized by its multi-colored themes and perspectives, as well as the presence of personalities of international intensivist medicine. And so, symbolically, in 2014, when the name of the congress was changed from Sepsis and MODS to Colors of Sepsis, Zlatka Holušová gathered for the musical and Roman Kula for the medical Colors at the opening. It can be seen that big visions are worth fighting for! Even if you're Too Old To Rock'n'Roll, But Too Young To Die!

The level of the 18th edition of COLORS of SEPSIS was traditionally high.

The "spirit" of this great professional event and my experience of it was strong and will only fade away after its end. I honestly and gladly admit that. About 8 years ago, when a fellow microbiologist reproached me that anyone who doesn't go to Ostrava for the Sepsis and MODS postgraduate course is not "medically in", I decided to visit him for the first time. Participating in Ostrava at that time became an exceptional professional and cultural event for me. I thanked the microbiologist for the tip and as revenge I sent him a bronchoalveolar lavage sample from which he identified, according to his enthusiastic expression: "beautiful Pneumocysis jirovecii". I still don't know what made him happier. But for me it remains symbolic. At that time, discussions about the escalation of fungal infections in critically ill patients with increasing mortality were intensifying. Our patient with pneumocystis pneumonia survived, is still alive, and I go to Ostrava every year in January. Most of us will probably agree with the statement that the organizing committee manages to maintain the growth of the already high level of the event. I would therefore like to express my respect, admiration and gratitude to my colleagues, who are responsible for the fact that we like to return to Ostrava in January every year. Sepsis in Ostrava was repeatedly compared to a symposium in Brussels. I think that the quality of the presentations, the selection of VIP speakers, the communication of current problems that we are confronted with daily in routine clinical practice and the flawless organization of COLOR of SEPSIS are in no way behind the best intensivist events in the world. 1 participants, 400 lecturers and 250 presentations at the 350th edition during the 18-day program only confirm the fact that it is "in even though" and, moreover, being an active participant means considerable professional prestige. The program of the last year was carefully selected with regard to the topicality of the topics and the interdisciplinary penetration of sepsis and MODS issues. Formal and informal discussions could thus take place between intensivists, internists, surgeons, microbiologists and other specialists, which makes it possible to fulfill the concept of a comprehensive approach to patient treatment. Nurses in intensive care are an irreplaceable part of the provision of health care, hence the inclusion of the Nursing Section and this year's 3. The postgraduate course for nurses in intensive care emphasizes their importance and appears to be a very far-sighted organizational initiative. 13. The Symposium Current Affairs in Pediatric Care also reflected on the current issue of intensive care for patients in childhood. Due to their attractiveness, the choice between individual blocks of lectures, poster sections and workshops running in parallel was sometimes very difficult. In addition, full halls with standing participants in some blocks are again evidence of well-chosen topics and of course the high quality of the lecturers. Finally, I would once again like to thank the organizers and especially the chairman of the organizing committee MUDr. to Roman Kula, SCc. to thank them and wish them good health, enthusiasm and stamina as they work on the preparation of the next editions of COLORS of SEPSIS, which I personally am already looking forward to. Yours sincerely

The level of the 18th edition of COLORS of SEPSIS was traditionally high.

The 3rd year of the postgraduate course for nurses working in intensive care, which is an annual part of the prestigious professional event called "Colours of Sepsis" in Ostrava, was once again full of innovative elements. For the first time, the course for nurses included pediatric intensive care and prevention of nosocomial infections in critically ill children. This issue pointed to the high erudition of the organizers, who presented the issue of nosocomial infections across individual age categories. Experts from several European countries took part in the event and agreed that the prevention of nosocomial infections is no less important than their treatment itself. The Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Midwives is an honored team that can participate in this event as a professional guarantor every year. I personally bow to the tenacity and enthusiasm with which MUDr. Kulla and PhDr. Zoubková in organizing this event and I am already looking forward to the 4th year of the postgraduate course for nurses working in intensive care, which will be part of the 19th year of Colors of Sepsis again in 2017 in Ostrava. With respect

PhDr. Milan Lauinc, PhD., dipl. pp. Slovak Chamber of Nurses and Midwives
