Dear colleagues, dear organizers and sponsors,

The 12th postgraduate course, which historically carries the terms MODS and sepsis in its name, was held in Ostrava in January 2010. The inconspicuous and modest creation of its entire annual series is a long-ago event whose significance not only proved its longevity, but became a prototype of today's, indeed contemporary postgraduate concept. The professional event has a consistently rising and proven quality, the course is also filled with the international participation of renowned lecturers. It includes various proven forms of knowledge transfer and exchange of experience. 12. The PG course 2010 is no longer "just" a postgraduate course and it is far from being only about MODS and sepsis. Follows news in intensive medicine for adults and children, important news and trends in related fields. A number of professional societies participate in the preparation under the leadership of the Czech-Slovak Forum for Sepsis. The progress, participation, activities in 2010 were even above standard: the highest participation to date; young workers in the field participated for the first time in about one third; the best lecture was awarded; various interactive forms of pro-con discussion and meetings with experts were also included; a company symposium was included. The topics have gone beyond the scope of the original title. In several simultaneous sections, she introduced the perspective of robotic surgery as well as the basics of intensive care medicine in pediatrics, nutritional intervention, the current view of beta-blockers, polytraumas, the entry of palliative care into intensive care medicine, new drugs, the possibilities of artificial ventilation and many more other contemporary pillar innovations and specific procedures. The capacity of the Clarion congress hotel for individual sections and mini-symposiums, for the numerous participation of exhibitors, and even for refreshments and social occasions was used to the fullest. The January date always contributes to full-day participation - in 2010, a repeated flurry of snow did not prevent participants from coming, but it encouraged their interest in participating in the full-day rich professional program and evening social relaxation. The course also provided the opportunity to meet with committees of professional societies and bodies. He thereby confirmed the fundamental importance of the current negotiations on the future profile of intensive medicine in the postgraduate education system with negotiations on the entry of numerous clinical disciplines into its content. An important consensus document of professional societies on the transition from intensive care to palliative care in adult patients was finalized, recommended to the Czech Medical Chamber for publication. The 12th PG course on MODS and Sepsis retained its historical name but combined it with a much broader framework of critical care medicine now and in the future. It is an example of the scope and innovations of intensive medicine in a wide multidisciplinary scope in the presentation of many didactic forms and with permanent value on an electronic medium. Last but not least, in retrospect, it is necessary to highly appreciate the old, original proposal of the organization and the main theme given by an individual initiative and highlight the development of the idea to the current and future perspective form.

Dear colleagues,

The 12th year of the Ostrava PG Sepsis and MODS course traditionally filled the premises of the Clarion Hotel with the "Spirit of Sepsis" during the 4 days of January. Considering the success of previous years of the course, the expectations of the participants are far from modest. However, with the help of numerous Czech, Slovak and foreign speakers, the organizers again prepared a high-quality professional program, which was spiced up with interesting discussions and flavored with a pleasant friendly atmosphere during the conference, but also during the entire accompanying social program. For those who would like to discover the secret of the success of the head chef MUDr. R. Kulu, CSc. it can be revealed that it consists primarily in a multidisciplinary approach to the issue of Sepsis and MODS. It is this that makes it possible to penetrate into the complex pathophysiological processes of the disease developed during evolution. It turns out that the recognition of the stages and regularity of pathophysiological reactions during the progression of the disease is, in addition to timeliness, the most important prerequisite for targeted intervention and effective reversal of the development of sepsis in the patient. The importance and complexity of the current process of searching for causal links and the possibilities of influencing the development of sepsis were documented in addition to the overview lectures, especially by the numerous Pro+Con discussions that took place during the course. Revealing detailed relationships and dependencies cannot be imagined today without close interdisciplinary cooperation. This explains why an increasing number of specialists in infectious medicine, hematology, immunology, microbiology and pharmacology are gradually appearing among the intensivists on the Ostrava courses. It goes without saying that the event is gaining more and more popularity and is far from being the prerogative of intensivists. In addition to paediatricians, you can meet here, for example, numerous surgeons and other specialists who are interested in sepsis and MODS. In conclusion, allow me to express my wish that the Ostrava PG Sepsis and MODS course will continue to gain more and more supporters and that each subsequent year will be a useful and pleasant meeting that can be looked forward to throughout the year in advance.
